Although for many people the white and narrow streets of the town centre constitute by
themselves a great open-air museum, (not for nothing is Sitges called "La Blanca Subur"),
there are 3 museums of great importance: The Cau Ferrat Museum, the Maricel Museum and
the Romantic Museum. The Cau Ferrat and the Maricel museums are located one next to each
other at the Fonollar Street, by the Racó de la Calma, beside the most emblematic
church of Sitges (La Punta church). Additionally, the Romantic Museum is located
at the Sant Gaudenci, beside the Cap de la Vila square (Sitges neuralgic centre).
The Cau Ferrat Museum was, in the past, the residence of one of the most significant
figures of the Catalan modernism, the artist and writer Santiago Rusiñol, whom Sitges
remembers proudly. This museum is the picture of the said Catalan modernism, and there’s
possible to find art works of Picasso, Zuloaga and Casas, among many others. There’s
also the piano which Manuel de Falla used to compose part of the works "El amor brujo"
and "Noches de los jardines de España".
Collections coming from private donations can be found at the Maricel Museum. It’s possible
to gaze at medieval art, sea related art and, above all, it’s possible to go over the works
of artists bounded to Sitges from the romanticism period to the one belonging to the great
teachers of the Catalan modernism.
The Romantic Museum ("Can Llopis"), reflects for its part, the customs, manners
and the way of living of a traditional Catalan wealthy family of the modernism in that period.
Its inner courtyard and the staircase are of special interest. The collection on display
includes, among many other exhibits, a private collection of more than 400 dolls from
different countries.
You can fast and easily get to Barcelona
either by car or train, where you can enjoy lots
of museums of great interest such as the Picasso, Miró or Tàpies museums. The very
interesting Railway Museum located at Vilanova i la Geltrú, less than 6,5 miles far from
Sitges, holds the most important steam train collection in Europe.
Apart from the permanent exhibitions named above, Sitges constantly holds temporary
exhibitions, art auctions, cultural meetings, and a lot more besides. Don’t hesitate
to ask about the ones taking place during your visit at the front desk of our
Beach & Golf Hotel.
